This Toilet Tuesday (7/10/18)
It’s Tuesday! Get your music here! Well, you can’t actually acquire it here, but we’ve got it all rounded up. Hans and I sifted through it all and found a few pretty sweet ones (and I’m going to second his Armory recommendation right now), so be sure to give those a listen. Otherwise, there should be plenty more in the bigger list to catch your attention.
Dire Omen – Formless Fire Embodied (Dark Descent Records) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Null”
Dire Omen’s last full length is one I frequently go back to despite not being into this type of stuff anymore. They play dark, twisted death metal, somewhat akin to their countrymen Paroxsihzem, Antediluvian, and Phobocosm. Dizzyingly chaotic and technical, yet somehow sounding natural at the same time. Imagine slowly getting absorbed by the gnarliest, oldest tree you’ve ever seen, its trunk scarred and its branches twisting and winding in every direction. 18/07/13 (Hans)
Barbatos/Hellripper – Barbatos/Hellripper (split- Granite Factory Records) [Black Thrash]
Stream
If for some reason you’re still unfamiliar with Hellripper’s blazing brand of blackened thrash, here’s the perfect bite-sized introduction. If you’re not grinning when you hear James McBain’s (also active as Lord Rot) fingers fly across the fretboard, hear the pounding drums, or at least when you read the delightful song titles, then I’m sorry, but there’s bound to be something wrong with you. 18/7/8 (Hans)
Armory – The Search (High Roller Records) [Speed Metal]
Listen to “Hyperion”
Perhaps the most pleasant surprise here – before I realised just how awesomely fun the guitarwork is – is the singer. I feel I’ve heard one too many speed metal bands with one-dimensional vocalists, whereas this guy can not only sing, but transition to a Kreator-esque shriek or a falsetto scream when necessary. The sing/scream juxtaposition reminds me a wee bit of Blind Guardian’s debut. Also, the band sounds wonderfully, genuinely old school. 18/7/13 (Hans)
Future Corpse – Culture Ruins Everything Around Me (Independent) [Prog Punk]
Listen
I initially checked out Future Corpse because their album title gave me a laugh, and it turns out they play some pretty jamming prog punk. The upbeat, bouncy nature of the preview songs combined with a heap of technical proficiency remind me more than a little of Protest the Hero in terms of feel, but maybe a little closer to the metalcore side of things. Whatever you want to call it, it rules, and I have high hopes for the final product. 7/11/18 (Spear)
