On this day of cloggéd content, we push forward with a grunt—the sound of perseverance. This week we’ve got 4D3D3D3-dimensional death, ghost dogs, and mineral metal. Blighted Eye – Agony’s Bespoke (Beyond the Top Records) [Meloblack / Prog Death]
Blighted Eye’s debut LP balks at the constraints of genre; a blackened backbone creates a steady foundation for each track, allowing myriad influences to shine through without sacrificing the band’s identity. From double-picked tech death riffs to Kyle Chapman’s occasional clean vocals (reminiscent of Caligula’s Horse), the compositions follow a complex (yet natural) course, always careful to avoid prog’s pitfalls. Acoustic passages evoke the spirit of Agalloch, and within moments, melodic shredding and grunge rear their heads, but fear not—no ragtime pianos were harmed in the making of Agony’s Bespoke. Each of the preview tracks displays Blighted Eye’s creative songwriting, and their balance of restraint and maximalism is remarkable for a band in their fledgling years. -Roldy
