What The Shid Is World Toilet Day 2022?
There seems to be a day for everything lately, innit? (Old owl hoots at clouds, etc.) There are really people out there wildin’ over crimson coffee cups. I’m here to tell you that today is an important day, one that addresses a world-wide problem that impacts an absurd ~50% of human beings in some capacity. It also intersects with the namesake of this blog—it is World Toilet Day, my dumplings. We make a lot of noise about shidding and farding here at TovH, but 1 in 4 people lacks access to a toilet, and diarrheal disease is the second leading cause of death worldwide for children 5 years and under. There are a host of dire issues related to sanitation, and this year’s initiative is ‘Making the invisible visible.’ Let’s help this issue float to the surface.
Faecal contamination isn’t just your average, sewer-tier lyric from a BDM band—2 billion people get their water from a source contaminated with faeces. Groundwater, which makes up 99% of the planet’s fresh water, is vital to our survival as a species. It also happens that inadequate sanitation leads to said contamination. There are a plethora of resources and charities through the links above, though I’ll highlight the simply-titled (and trusted) Water.Org. Donations are one of many ways you can help, but if you even mention this initiative to one person, it can help raise much-needed awareness for the world’s most vulnerable populations. ~<3 Roldy
