We may well be past the dry season: a healthy stream of releases has rained into the Bowl’s open maw, ready to be explored by stinky divers. Arkhaaik – Uihtis (Eisenwald) [Blackened Death/Doom]
With the combination of tin and copper, humans entered the Bronze Age; while this was surely a step forward in technological terms, it by no means separated us from our animal nature. (If anything, it simply gave us longer claws and sharper teeth.) The importance of this newly-discovered material—and the role it played in hunting—is explored throughout Uihtis, itself an alloy of modern and ancient metal styles. The preview track “Hrkþos Heshr Hiagom” ranges from the theatrical, baritone vocals of Greek black metal to extended-range sludge, stopping only to process the bodies of fallen prey. These moments of respite take shape as the sounds of open grassland as the sun descends: insects trill; ululations resound; a growl of distortion mimics unseen beasts in the dark. At once hypnotic and propulsive, Uihtis smelts the ritualistic death of Barús with post-metal soundscapes; this new weapon is barbed and well-balanced, flying true into the flesh, where it will remain until the chase is done. -Roldy
