Phosphorus – Frail Grasp of Broken Hands (Independent) [Post-Black]
Despite the memento mori in the artwork, I was surprised by the pitch-blackened death/doom that introduces Frail Grasp of Broken Hands. Perhaps the muted tones and simple beauty led me astray? (Perhaps death metal bands should stop being cowards and use more flowers.) Subverting expectations is crucial to post-adjacent genres, as long build-ups to predictable crescendos can make repeat listens a chore; with the title track and “The Messiah,” Phosphorus takes inspiration from Conjurer‘s sludgy walls of sound and Pallbearer‘s plaintive cleans, winding through tempos and emotions without need of any blatantly manufactured catharsis. This may be the debut LP from these newcomers, but their grasp on songwriting is anything but frail. -Roldy
