This Toilet Tuesday (11/3/26)
Thanksgiving is lame
No skellymans within sight
But we shall flush on
This week, we’ve got withering wisterias, OnlyWorms, and R.A. Salvacore. While the post-Halloween dump slump is upon us, there remains a ripe pile of releases, just waiting to waft into your life. Cross-pollination is rife if the sub-sub-subgenres encountered below are any indication, and long-lost entities return after decades of shiddy sleep on an unsuspecting populace. Dive in before the Toilet freezes over, and as always, let us know what we missed in the comments!
Grand Harvest – Home (Independent) [Melodic Blackened Death/Doom]
It has been three years since Grand Harvest sowed the seeds of their debut LP, Consummatum Est; judging by Home‘s album art, it is time to reap the souls of those who fell for the young band’s morose melodeath. Shades of Nightfell‘s sadboi OSDM can be heard in the intertwining tremolo riffs and steady clinks in preview track “Dawnwaster” while “Enter Azrael”‘s stately pace and symphonic elements nod to the Hellenic black metal sound. There’s a comforting simplicity in these arrangements that allows them to strike directly at our emotions, unimpeded by gaudy experimentation or listless, labyrinthine songwriting. That’s not to say the songs lack their own identity: “Dawnwaster” immediately erupts into blackened death blasting, and “Enter Azrael” dwells in doom tempos for much of its runtime, ending with ethereal clean vocals and dense layering in the vein of Septicflesh. Only the Grim Reaper knows what surprises will crop up when the album releases this Friday. -Roldy
