Malevich – Under a Gilded Sun (Church Road Records) [Blackened Grindcore / Sludge / Skramz]
Malevich have the rare ability to slice your face off regardless of tempo; if Under a Gilded Sun is any indication, they’ve been at the whetstone since last year’s Trembling and Dowsed EP. Preview tracks “Blossom in Full Force” and “Into Bliss” meld influences from the single-coil grind of Beaten To Death to Yautja‘s claustrophobic sludge, yet there is still room for beauty in the bedlam. A slew of vocal styles—not limited to paint-peeling skramz and morose crooning—nest amid melodic post-metal sections, making the album more accessible without lessening its emotional weight. This delicate balance of despair and (a sliver of) hope showcases the band’s nuanced songwriting; I have a feeling I’ll be seeing stars when the album releases in full this Friday. -Roldy
