O Seat ov Satan, O Perch ov Pandemonium, let not the waters ov Thy Bowl turneth to icy crystals upon mine horripilated cheeks. This week, we’ve got Abby and the Normals, pig peener, and a planetary mining vessel. It’s a shallow poo pool this late into the year, but there are hidden kernels of gold for those taking note. Grabjahre – In den Ästen (Misericordia Records) [Black]
Every winter there seems to be a single bare-bones, hypnotic black metal release I have no business enjoying but do nonetheless; this year’s dubious honor goes to the debut EP from Austrian upstarts, Grabjahre. From clashing, open-note riffs (think Artificial Brain‘s “Synthesized Instinct“) to faintly melodic tremolos in the vein of Anicon, In Den Ästen covers a wide swathe of black metal styles without reinventing the Iberian Mace. Black ‘n roll beats and detours into doom territory break up the blasting just enough to avoid monotony, but rest assured, this release is monochromatic, grim, and unpleasant as a wintry mix. Who knows if Grabjahre will stay with me when the permafrost melts, but until then I’m thoroughly enjoying grimacing through my time with In Den Ästen. -Roldy
