Defect Designer – Depressants (Transcending Obscurity Records) [Prog Death]
The latest LP from Norway’s everythinged death metal institution, Defect Designer, carries quite the misnomer; in fact, the gonzo songwriting on Depressants has jolted me from a bout of musical anhedonia. From the staccato grind of “Daily Dose of Gloom” to an utterly unexpected foray into anthemic melodeath in “Repeated Aversive Stimuli Inducer,” you’ll get what the album art shows on the tin: a swarm of clashing colors and textures; an ode to maximalism. There’s also a song about warfare between colonies of the most toxic of all insects, so you know this thing is post-avant as heqq. Time to up the ante, Mastodon and Pestilence! -Roldy
