Riff ov the Week: The Original Soundtrack Edition
conductor conducting an orchestra isolated on white background with copy area
The famed lizard has decreed that this week we will feature only “riffs” from OSTs. It was a tough requirement, but many of you rose to the challenge.
Last week, I won, and rightly so. Bow to the might of Gloryhammer.
Next week:
- It’s a normal Riff ov the Week. If you have one you’ve been saving, time to use it.
- Send your riffs to toiletovhellriff@gmail.com. Include your name, a link to the video, the time of the riff, and an explanation.
- If you have an idea for a theme, let me know.

DIE OF SORROW.

The riff at 1:09 will break into your house and tear your wife in half.

Hard category this week and after my first idea for submission was knocked on the head by that reptilian scalliwag I had to go back to the drawing board. Enter South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut and DVDA. Riff starts at 0:35 with guest vocals by one Jaymz Hetfield. It was either this or Blame Canada.
Lacertilian
This fucking riff.
Tigeraid
I was thinking of somewhat obvious choices like The Matrix or Heavy Metal, but then I remembered the FUCKING Rules of the Movie Theatre, thanks to Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters! The base riff from start to finish is nice and crunchy. Can you imagine being smacked around by this in an actual theatre?
Richter
We did it reel to reel. 0:00. Or whenever.
Óðinn
I am Óðinn, the God of wisdom, war, art, culture, and the dead. I am the supreme deity and creator of the cosmos. Your false gods are meaningless. They will be destroyed. This is my Riff ov the Week submission, “No Shelter” by Rage Against the Machine from the Godzilla (1998) soundtrack. The riff starts at 0:19. This is the only movie theme song, that I know of, which flat out disses the film for which it was written. Hail Óðinn!
Xan
Riff starts at 0:24. Out of the bevvy of kick-ass tunes that one is treated to while brutally murdering people, this has to be one of my favorites. It has the wonderful synth that one might hear in an ’80s action film and it perfectly sets the scene for bludgeoning people to death with hammers and bats.
KJU
This is actually a series of dueling solos, from one of the most underrated movies of all time.
Monkey
Whether or not you like anime, you gotta admit it, the opening for Trigun is feckin badass. A lovely bit of Clutch-esque stoner rock goodness from Tsuneo Imahori sets the mood perfectly for one of the greatest sci-fi western’s around.
Coolstorybro
I present to y’all Soundgarden‘s “Birth Ritual” from the Cameron Crowe Seattle grunge love letter “Singles.” Other than featuring a bunch of awesome artists (including Chris Cornell as a less-than-reputable car stereo installer), the movie kinda sucks. Luckily, “Birth Ritual” kicks ass once dat riff kicks in at 0:03. Kim Thayall lets ‘er rip while Chris shrieks his fucking head off like the world’s coming to a grisly end.
Boss
“No one knows who they were, or what they were doing”, utters Nigel Tufnel as Spinal Tap rips in to Stonehenge. OST? Check. Metal? Check. Riff? 1:25-2:05. Check.
