The flu sucks. I don’t recommend it.

Apologies for the lack of TTT last week; I should have figured spending a weekend surrounded by far too much of the general public would result in some horrible disease, but I didn’t figure it’d put me down as hard as it did. But I’m back now, and I’ve got a bigass pile of new tunes ready for you. Hans and Karhu did the dirty work this week, picking out a bunch of bangers for you to check out. Check out the list too, and maybe share some sweet stuff that landed last week that we should all hear as well.

Bütcher – 666 Goats Carry My Chariot (Osmose Productions) [Speed Metal]
Listen to “666 Goats Carry My Chariot”

Never would I have expected such a grandiose track hiding behind that title and genre tag. Bütcher offer up lengthy but measured ride through quiet parts, stomping Viking marches, and blackened heavy metal frenzy, all topped with almost King Diamond-like screaming. Changes between the parts are accompanied by impressive lead guitar work. I’m very curious if this is representative of the whole record. 1/31/20 (Hans)

Marrasmieli – Between Land and Sky (Naturmacht Productions) [Black Metal]
Stream

Expectations subverted yet again! Instead of sterile, long-winded trees’n’shit bm, this is… well, still long-winded, but it doesn’t feel that way thanks to the band packing some punch and nicely balancing the scale between beauty and ferocity. The third song demonstrates this well; just when you think one of the elements is beginning to dominate, the other doubles down and either knocks you over or spirits you away. 1/27/20 (Hans)

Coffin Curse – Ceased to Be (Memento Mori) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Grave Offender,” “Chopped Clean Off,” “Where Sickness Thrives”

Straightforward Chilean death metal with a lot of direct tremolo riffs that know how to twist and bend just at the right time and the right places and a hint of thrashy rhythmics. Despite their apparent simplicity Coffin Curse stay away from the caveman death territory and are all the more crushing and headbanging for it. Goddamn this rips. 1/27/20 (Karhu)

Panopticon/Aerial Ruin – split (Bindrune Recordings) [Folk]
Listen to “The Pit,” “Sanguine of ail”

Panopticon’s side includes four harrowingly beautiful bluegrass/folk songs recorded with the help of cellist P. Urban. Not quite depressingly beautiful, but depressing and beautiful. And also somehow warm and hopeful. Aerial Ruin’s half brings to the table brighter folk with ethereal vocal stylings from Eric Moggridge, but while he does a fine work on them, just about anything would have trouble hitting hard after that Panopticon half. A good thing then, that on the physical copies Aerial Ruins plays first. 1/31/20 (Karhu)
