Flush it Friday: Shave and a Haircut…

…Two Bitties.
Two weeks ago, I was at the barbershop talkin’ hardcore, as one does. My barber, a nice dude who cuts a good fade and shaves a clean beard, has been in and around just about every major scene in the US. He was headed to This is Hardcore in Philly that weekend and Maryland throwback Desperate Measures came up. Sharing their name though not sound with Leeway’s 1991 album, Desperate Measures led the first wave of ’80s revival, channeling Judge, the first Gorilla Biscuits 7”, Youth of Today, and their ilk. Mandatory to have owned this 7” from Youngblood Records.
He also told me about a recent trip to Europe that was book-ended by two Oasis shows in England. In the interim, he and his travel party went to a hardcore show in Paris, and one of the bands on the bill was Take It in Blood. Gangster skinhead shit with a real affinity for the toughest ’90s bands ever such as Merauder and Dmize, Take It In Blood is proof positive that beatdown revival isn’t just a US phenomenon. “Far from being the greatest, close to being the realest” is such a sick way to describe your own band.
I’ve been back home all week. Spent yesterday in St. Augustine visiting a friend who just moved there. Seen a lot of good shorebirds including a roseate spoonbill flying overhead in the marshes next to US17. I missed the Fiddlehead show. It’s fine. It’s fine.
WE’RE FLUSHIN’!
