 JIDGod Does Like Ugly
Dreamville/Interscope | August 8, 2025

Atlanta rapper JID is back after 2022’s much ballyhooed Forever Story with a new album that is as tantalizing as it is uneven. On an album that references either a slant reading of Biblical verse, a jpegmafia song, or even an album from backpacker legends Atmosphere, JID shows off an undeniable range as a rapper even if some of the beat choices can lead to some head-scratching rather than head-nodding. “Community” featuring Clipse is the standout, and the whole first half of the album and later tracks like “On McAfee” and “K-Word” make this album worth the price of admission.

Statute of HeavenHung from Rope Woven by Hope
Heartworm Press | September 24, 2025

I love Wes Eisold so much I have, at least on more than one occasion, drunkenly written poems in diaries about him. Though we’ve never really been post-American Nightmare, Wes’s relationship to hardcore has transformed, in ways that are perhaps too obvious to name. Before Cold Cave, though, there were Some Girls and XO Skeletons, attempts made to chart a new path. Statute of Heaven, with its grey-on-black album cover, lo-fi tone, and in-betweenness, seems to capture the spirit of all these disparate yet overlapping projects. The frigidly heart wrenching poetry of “End” takes us back and moves us forward.

SLOWHOLE SLOWHOLE
Independent | October 4, 2024

If you happen to live in or near Athens, GA, SLOWHOLE is playing a house show with Bone Bag the very night of this post, and I’d advise you to attend. Marred with the wretched self-inflicted woundingness of classic Nola sludge, this album is also shot through its collapsed veins with manic breakouts of despondent black metal blast beats and a perverse, agitated grindcore mentality. The whole album has a kind of eerie quality of estrangement, one that strands you as an outcast on the shores of the very island of reality that you thought suitably stable. I’m distressingly unmoored.

Feijoa Tree A Day in the Life
Fiadh Productions | March 24, 2025

I am paid huge premiums to promote certain labels. I’m a shill for shells, baby! Look at that silver cassette with its forest green inlays. Every letter of that sentence netted me millions of dollars. This bucolic piece of subscriber-only forest synth is a fawn lapping at a brook, a dreaming dancing under a crescent moon, a miracle of reappearing trees. Where do we find calm, rest, and magic these days? To quote Jim Harrison, “If I came away feeling much better, which I did, it was because I had been back in a landscape where I felt I belonged.”

Slow BlinkLetters Home
PITP | September 24, 2025

Described as “tape loop weather patterns,” Letters Home registers a recursive pattern of unspooling and respooling. Impossibly touching moments of connection blink in and out of existence at intervals recurrent enough to keep you in sync. Astral winks and nods from the cosmos to your variegated unraveling. A host of instruments cobbled together into an ameliorative symphonic ballast against full-blown collapse. What is life but a measurement of a slow blink? What are letters home but scribblings against shuttering and opening eyelids? Forgive yourself your means of maintenance. Revolutions are literal and metaphoric, and you’re always a part of them.
