Byaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

Look at that artwork.

FUCKING LOOK AT IT! 0/5 flushes! If you’re not at half mast right now, you need to see your primary care physician. Or a coroner. You might be dead. Or, at least your dick is.

New information for one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2014 has been released. France’s inimitable black metal and avant-garde monsters Blut Aus Nord will release their album Memoria Vetusta III: Saturnian Poetry on October 10th. The album will be available in CD (digipack) and Gatefold LP for us unabashed Luddites, and also as a digital download for you techno-centric warlocks. The album is being released by the always excellent Debemur Morti Productions, one of the best labels in extreme metal (their stable also includes Archgoat, Behexen, Dodsengel, Manes, and Monolithe).

From Debemur Morti: “The most influential Black Metal band of the last decade is finally back, two years after the last full length album, Cosmosophy, the monumental conclusion of the unforgettable 777 trilogy. This time, far from its filthy industrial realm, the enigmatic entity offers nothing less than one of the finest melodic, epic and grandiose Black Metal album ever!”

Memoria Vetusta III: Saturnian Poetry is the cap to BAN‘s Memoria Vetusta series, which began all the way back in 1996 with the incredible Memoria Vetusta I: Fathers of the Icy Age. Coming immediately on the heels of BAN’s amazing debut album, Ultima Thulee, part I continued with the debut’s sound and thematics: Norse/Pagan mythology, frostbitten atmosphere, and some of black metal’s most beautiful and memorable melodies. Part II in the series, Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue with the Stars, was released in 2009. In the intervening 13-years, Blut Aus Nord mastermind Vindsval explored music’s nightmarish underbelly, melding black metal with other elements such as industrial and noise. In stark contrast to the mechanical whirring and haunting starkness of albums like The Work Which Transforms God and Mort (released in 2003 and 2006, respectively), part II in the Memoria Vetusta series was BAN returning to their icy roots after a long layoff, offering a melodic masterpiece clad in a more traditional black metal structure and with more conventional songwriting. If you are unfamiliar with BAN or with the Memoria Vetusta series, check out this sample to see what’s in store:

The track listing for Saturnian Poetry, as taken from the Debemur Morti website, is as follows:

01. Prelude
02. Paien
03. Tellus Mater
04. Forhist
05. Henosis
06. Metaphor Of The Moon
07. Clarissima Mundi Lumina

The amazing cover artwork was painted by legendary artist Kristian “Necrolord” Wåhlin, and the layout for the album was conceived by Dehn Sora, who has worked with the likes of Neurosis and Ulver. You may be familiar with Necrolord’s work, as he has painted some of metal’s most memorable and famous covers, including classics for bands like Emperor, Bathory, Dark Funeral, and Dissection.

Debemur Morti already released a sample from the new album, and it sounds spectacular. MVIII sees BAN experimenting with clean vocals(!) for the first time in their illustrious discography, and I will be the first to tell you that they sound amazing! Check it out for yourself:

The preorder for the album hasn’t been set up yet at the Debemur Morti webstore (as of 8/28), but when it is, you will know!

Memoria Vetusta III – Saturnian Poetry is a magnificent pagan symphony of guitars, the quintessential expression of Majestic Black Metal!”
