Riff Of The Week: M O O D Edition
Riffs from Devin Townsend, Woe, Thou, Dyscarnate, Orodruin, Yes, and Tusmørke.
Last week our theme was Monster and I’m guessing my header image tempted fate and Shadow, Inc. in collusion with the meddling zuckercunt completely ratfucked the polls. I’m not even kidding. It was a closely competition between 4 of the entries but when I went to get the final results today it displayed just 3 votes. Obviously not as infuriating as Iowa, but I’m still tilted about it. Hundreds of votes gaaaawwwn. Anyway, I’m awarding victory to Megachiles with that Coagulate submission, that shit kicks arse. They’ve even got a track about dissecting fascists, which never goes astray.
This week’s theme was Mood
Here’s what you sent in…
Yes – ‘Mood For A Day’ (Riff @ 0:10)
Steve Howe is still my favorite guitarist to this day and this nice little Spanish flair guitar part is just as sexy today as when I first heard it.
Woe – ‘A Violent Dread’ (Riff @ 3:54)
Getting my exam grades in a few days so the title is pretty much my mood right now (I now 100% I’ve failed but still is spooky). Also can we get more groovy moment like this in bm please?
Orodruin – ‘Voice in the Dark’ (Riff @ 03:19)
Mood spelled backwards is DOOM!
Devin Townsend – ‘Bastard’ (Riff @ 0:32)
A young McNulty sitting in his college dorm room, discovering post-SYL Devin material, hearing “Bastard” for the first time = peak M O O D. What a beautiful song.
Iron Goddess of Mercy
Thou – “Free Will” (Riff @ 7:19)
My mood, always and forever: We are the stone that starts the avalanche / We are the cough that spreads the plague / We are the spark that lights the inferno. <3 <3 <3
Dyscarnate – ‘Iron Strengthens Iron’ (Riff @ 0:09)
I’m often in a bad mood. This puts me in a good mood.
Tusmørke – ‘Ekebergkongen’ (Riff @ 0:00)
Tusmørke is a “psychodelic prog folk” from Norway. And even when making albums with “children music” (complete with chipmunks vocals) they have this lovely dark tint to their music (and artwork) – they are Norwegian afterall – slightly peering through the “folkness”.
Great stuff to wind down from all the OSDM, technical vegan deathgrind etc. and dance like an arthritis ridden bird, while having something like this nasty flute “riff” to pop up from time to time and tickle your metal prostate. And if you have a band like that in your musical catalogue – something to chill and dance like a moron to – type BIG MOOD in the comments.
Next week I want riffs from an album’s 9th song
