Riff Of The Week: Half-Yearly Giveaway Edition

Share:

Half of 2017 is gone. These are the riffs you’ve chosen as your favourites of the year thus far. Whose will make it through to the finale? Whose will languish in a temporal vortex of ignominy, never to progress into the month of July? Why are tortoises class traitors? The answers to these questions, and other questions are detailed herein.

Last week we got noodlin’ and y’all battled it out to be top dork in our Prog Edition. After a fairly even start from all the contestants, we ended up with a fromage à trois between Mastodon, Coroner, and Opeth. The final results showing a victory to the ‘Dong, meaning Positronic Brain scores the copy of Elder‘s new album Reflections Of A Floating World, courtesy of generous TovH reader nbm02ss.

This week is our half-yearly giveaway round. Armless bandit Richter picked up the victory in our First Quarter Giveaway Round back in March, although if memory serves me correctly (and it never does) he declined the prize to either keep up his general mysteriousness or to feign having some trace of morality, something I fail to achieve every week. Anyway, this week we are doing it all over again but with three extra months worth of riffs to choose from. Must have been a quiet quarter though because we only received 5 bloody riffs. Guess we won’t be seeing any “uhh, where’s [riff that I prefer]?” comments around will we? I’d certainly fucking hope not. Don’t forget to use the PROMO CODE SILT after voting to decrease the absorption rate of your carpet by 2% on your next fluid spill.

Lock Up – “Desolation Architect” (Riff @ 0:00)

Saw this weeks theme, saw that this week that I happen to be getting my Lock Up, Brujeria and Napalm Death ticket and courtesy of Rusty Shackleford’s review earlier this year, allowed me to submit a riff from Lock Up’s Demonization album. Riff starts at 0.00 and I soon as I heard it, I knew that this album was going to be a winner. This riff is perfect for getting out any pent up aggression.

Winds Of Leng – “Audrey” (Riff @ 1:47)

Could there be any other winner of this RoTW?
NOPE

Paganizer – “The Insanity Never Stops” (Riff @ 0:05)

I heard that Paganizer song that was released last week, and it had a gun cocking sample at the beginning. I think those are hilarious and usually followed by a hella siq riff.

Maggot Heart – “No Light In You” (Riff @ 0:01)

Certainly, the Toilet has seen many great releases this year (there was even some tech death I didn’t hate!). It’s shaping up to be a killer year for [INSERT GENRE BIAS], and my “Best of [INSERT ARBITRARY TIMEFRAME/SEASON/GENRE] List” is practically overflowing. So at first this seemed like a hard choice. However, Richter’s introduction to Loud Guitar Goth had been especially intriguing, and when I got around to really listening to Maggot Heart, it suddenly seemed easy. Then it seemed really hard again because every song on this EP is god damn excellent. Submitting only one riff doesn’t seem to do it justice. I picked one that sounds kinda sexy and dangerous and cool, and there’s more where that came from. Check out the full EP and then come back for Rope Sect and GOLD.

Mutoid Man – “Kiss Of Death” (Riff @ 0:14)

Ahh, Mutoid Man.  Purveyor of the finest heavy, sludgy, occasionally shreddy, always fun riffs you’ve ever laid ears on.  After kicking off the song with a slick little intro, the boys (Men, I guess) get down to business at 0:14, with some gnarly bass tone underneath a rockin’ guitar line, that builds to an expertly implemented chromatic walk up at 0:39.  So tasty!  Who doesn’t love a little MM? (Bonus points for the leather belt shenanigans at 2:39)

Next week we’re asking for riffs from albums that feature a skull on their cover. That only gives you 84% of all metal albums ever made to choose from, so you’d better get cracking. Send your entries to toiletovhellriff@gmail.com by Friday, being sure to include your screen-name and a short description of the riff with a time-stamp of when it begins.
