Now that everyone has heard each metal album released in ’23, we’re right back to swabbing the M-A septic tank for the choicest fecal finds. Like with most Januaries, the pipes are a little shy in this first edition, but I’m sure in a few weeks there will be sewage spraying everywhere again, and all will be right in our little corner of the web. This week, we’ve got soaked robe blackjazz, Kalashnikov grind, and packing peanut doom. A thin layer of ice rimes the bowl—will it support your weight? Or will you soon be crapped under ice?

Listening to the latest from our friend in Engulf, I was reminded of one of the first experiences I had in my current apartment. Upon opening the door to the little owl’s room, I flicked on the light to see a G I R T H Y house centipede lunge at my unbesockéd feet. The ancient, instinctive fear I felt then mirrors my reactions to Hal Microutsicos’ skittering tech death—discomfort; adrenaline dumped in the bloodstream; fascination. The constant writhing of tracks like “The Nefarious Hive” calls to mind teeming halls of termites; a veritable colony of riffs resides within each song, forming a superorganism known as The Dying Planet Weeps.
