Cineastre – Fortgang (Independent) [Atmoblack / Neofolk]
Fortgang is composed of three songs (the last being a suite split into 5 movements), each honoring memories of a bandmate’s lost loved ones. The somber theme and muted colors of the artwork suggest hypnotic, mournful atmoblack, so the driving tempo of the intro—akin to Vanum‘s steady march—came as a pleasant surprise. This eulogy captures beautifully the triumphs and catastrophes of life, moving through moods and genres in shifting intervals; from a soulful bass solo to DSBM cawing, “Fortgang” mirrors the unpredictability of being. Shades of Alcest are cast in the choral, layered cleans, and the marriage of meloblack and neofolk recalls the works of Nechochwen, albeit with a greater emphasis on post-metal soundscapes. The track is laid to rest by weeping strings, and we’re left to wonder what follows the appearance of the bright light ahead. -Roldy
