The Mist from the Mountains – Portal – The Gathering of Storms (Primitive Reaction) [Meloblack]
Ahh, 9-minute black metal songs—my arch nemeses. Thankfully, The Mist from the Mountains have enough ideas to keep their compositions fresh throughout. “The Seer of Ages,” the lead single from TMftM’s sophomore effort, begins with a groovy black ‘n roll riff reminiscent of early Old Man’s Child; from there, the song branches out into myriad sounds, from epic meloback (replete with choral cleans) to jazz fusion leads and baritone Woods of Ypres crooning. I’m not usually a fan synth strings, but they’re implemented well in this track, adding a magisterial flair without becoming pure melodrama or smothering the other instruments. True to its name, the album promises to deliver listeners to distant lands, with only the faintest map of genres for guidance. -Roldy
