Orob – Golden Tears of Love and Sorrow (L’Ordalie Noire) [Prog Black / Post-Metal]
Like the Ouroborus, Golden Tears of Love and Sorrow represents an eternal return of sorts—a cyclical journey through black metal history from its rudiments in punk to outlandish experiments and back again, often in the same track. From “Sun, Borrowed”‘s dispassionate vocals (reminiscent of Ulver‘s latest releases) and shimmering post-punk tones to the staccato riffing and chanting in “Sulfur Baptism,” these feisty Frenchmen strip and redress their style with dizzying frequency. (There’s even a blatant nod to TSoP-era Death in the the latter track, nestled lovingly amidst the blasting.) While there are just three full tracks on the EP (plus a short intro and interlude), Orob’s dense songwriting carries the weight—and number of ideas—of a full album without splitting at the seams.
