Welcome to another round of new releases on This Toilet Tuesday! With winter nearly upon us, the metal has grown noticeably icier, with frosty black metal being the dominating force on this week’s roundup. That’s not to say that there’s nothing else to enjoy; there’s plenty of doom, power metal, and even a couple folk metal bands thrown in there this time. With this much variety, there’s no excuse for not finding something you don’t like. Get at it!

ara kra

Ära Krâ – Ära Krâ (Through Love Records) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Strang & Schwert”

“Strang and Schwert” opens with a tremolo storm that kicks you right in the Adam’s apple and continues to stomp on your throat for another two and a half minutes. The band makes great use of dynamics, ramping the violence back to allow a gentle piano interlude to lull you into submission before beating you about the head and neck again. Of all the bands blending black metal with hardcore, Ära Krâ are easily one of the most violent. FFO: Deluge, So Hideous, Converge 12/4/15 (W.)

enthrallment

Enthrallment – Eugenic Wombs (Rebirth The Metal Productions) [Brutal Death Metal]
Preview

Come on and slam, and welcome to the jam. Come on and slam, and welcome to the jam. There isn’t a lot to go off in this clip, but what is there is enticing. Enthrallment surely know how to bring the slams while still maintaining some technicality and innovation. I look forward to being brutalized by this album. FFO: Dying Fetus, Deeds of Flesh, Suffocation 12/4/15 (W.)

sunnOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Sunn O))) – Kannon (Southern Lord Records) [Drone]
Stream

Sunn O))) returns proper, at last, with only their trademark drone/doom on a proper solo effort. However, this three-song reflection of the group’s live show and/or sound does feature collaborators. Long term guitarist Oren Ambarchi and Attila Csihar throat-singing for one. If you’ve dug the band’s older albums you won’t find yourself disappointed, although it’s not a carbon-copy of their past. If you’re not familiar with them, or only with their collaborative albums, now’s high time to grab a Kannon and get some. 12/4/15 (Karhu)

elvenking

Elvenking – The Night of Nights – Live (live album- AFM Records) [Folk/Power Metal]
Listen to “Pagan Revolution”

For fans of the exquisite recipe that Elvenking make with the ferocious blend of melodic metal and multi-colored celtic folk trickstery, I have good news: the Italian magical forest-dwellers are releasing a live album with a DVD companion with 25 songs, revisiting the band’s entire career. Their 2014 record, The Pagan Manifesto, became my favorite of their catalogue, and I have no doubt that this release will be a worthy addition to the Elvenking library. From what the “Pagan Revolution” video shows, The Night of Nights has a slick production in which every band member shines with his own light, and the incredible and energetic performance of Damnágoras will be the leading bard on that show. I’m interested, indeed! Bring it on, my fellow Elven brethren! 12/4/15 (Link)

cloak of altering

Cloak of Altering – Manifestation (Crucial Blast) [Avant-garde Black Metal]
Listen to “Parasitic Altering Sickness”

Plague Beasts, the 2014 full-length from Cloak of Altering, was solidly on my year-end list last December. Mories isn’t messing around with his turnaround time, and I’ve got high hopes for Manifestation, the brand-new album under the Cloak of Altering name. The two tracks that have been released are full of Mories’ trademark wizardry; twisted synthscapes storm over a post-industrial foundation while he shrieks painfully in the background. It may not be breaking new ground from his other recent output (Gnaw Their Tongues, Pyriphlegethon, Caput Mortuum, Aderlating), but it will no doubt be fascinating. 12/4/15 (Stockhausen)

in malices wake

In Malice’s Wake – Light upon the Wicked (Punishment 18 Records) [Thrash]
Listen to “In Darkness”

I must be angry or something, because thrash has really been doing it for me lately. The harder and faster, the better, and In Malice’s Wake bring both. “In Darkness” is immensely aggressive, opening with rapid-fire pedaling guitars and machine gun drums. It’s an intense ride that doesn’t let up until the bloody finale. Fans of Nylithia and Revocation take note. 11/30/15 (Spear)

martriden

Martriden – Cold and The Silence (Independent) [Progressive Metal]
Stream

Martriden won Best Unsigned Band in Montana for their slick blend of black and death metal, but Cold and The Silence sees them exploring their more progressive side. Gone are the raging blasts and blackened riffs of yesteryear, eschewed in favor of winding melodies and a surprising amount of clean vocals. The result is a pleasing mixture of the earthly and the celestial; they aren’t afraid to experiment, but they don’t get so far up in the clouds that they lose focus on writing good songs. 11/30/15 (Spear)
