Welcome to This Toilet Tuesday! I bring you only the finest of metals to help rouse you from your post holiday hedonism comas (for the American crowd anyway- the rest of you should probably gorge yourselves on meat and beer to catch up). With the summer months approaching, the already overwhelming amount of new music is only going to pick up further. If you’re not sold on my picks, feel free to hit the list below; there’s tons of good stuff this week.

derdian

Derdian – Revolution Era (Independent) [Power Metal]
Listen to “Lord of War”

Derdian hold a special place in my heart as one of the first metal bands I discovered on my own, and I’m glad to hear they haven’t lost a step since the New Era trilogy. “Lord of War” features the inimitable Fabio Lione on vocals and sounds appropriately reminiscent of Rhapsody, though with a bit more emphasis on the keys. It’s pretty much exactly what you expect it to sound like, love it or hate it. Personally, I can’t wait to hear the rest of the album; this year has seen a drought in ridiculously cheesy power metal, and Derdian will undoubtedly deliver that in spades. 6/3/16 (Spear)

gevurah

Gevurah – Hallelujah! (Profound Lore Records) [Black Metal]
Stream

I’m going to venture a guess that the title Hallelujah! was given ironically, because this is some truly evil sounding shit. This roiling black cloud barrels forth without remorse, consuming everything in its path before settling in and choking the atmosphere. Everything drips with aggression and spite, from the churning guitars to the raw, howled vocals. It’s dense, heavy, and entirely unrelenting. 6/3/16 (Spear)

virus

Virus – Memento Collider (Karisma Records) [Dissonant Prog]
Listen to “Steamer”

It’s probably fair to say that none of us are really strangers to gross-sounding dissonant music at this point, but my admittedly inexperienced ears have never heard anything that sounds quite like Virus before. “Steamer” is both driving and oddly calm with a fair amount of jazz influence (particularly in the drumming), and it’s not as heavy as you might expect. Perhaps most interesting is the exclusive use of clean vocals, which add another layer of off-putting notes to follow and gives the music a unique texture. I’m not sure if I’m completely sold on it yet, but it’s definitely worth a listen. 6/3/16 (Spear)
