This Toilet Tuesday (1/9/18)
The cycle of new releases continues to turn, and I have very little to say about it this week. Not much caught my ear, but we’ve still picked out a couple solid jams for you to check out. Take a look at the list and let us know what shouldn’t be glossed over.
Upheaval – Altar of Ash (Independent) [Sludge]

The way this comes storming out of the gate, you’ll forgive me for double-checking that genre tag; this sounds a lot more akin to Black Metal than Sludge. Blasting, shredding, barely slowing down – up until around the two minute mark, where they take the foot off the gas. Thankfully, because this is where the track shines, pummeling you with a thick mid-tempo riff accompanied by a constant double bass. Thanks to the singer, it reminds me a bit Fange, Eyehategod, et al. And then they’re off again, black metaling their way to the end. Like a hit and run where the driver takes his sweet time to put it in reverse and roll over you once more before barreling on down the road. 01/12/18 (Hans)
Old Wolf – Faustian Mass (Divebomb Records) [Heavy Metal]

Heavy/trad metal is my musical comfort food- perfect on a slow week like this. Old Wolf has exactly what I look for from this type of music: chunky steel-bearing riffs, soaring vocals, and glorious shredding guitars. If you’re looking for challenging music, this isn’t it, but if you just want to bang your head and have a good time, you can’t go wrong here. 1/12/18 (Spear)
