This Toilet Tuesday (2/23/21)
Toilet Tuesday is here, my friends (and my enemies; you know who you are). We’ve got a huge plate of releases before us, a veritable feast of new music, so let’s dig right on in. Hans and I have prepped a couple of choice cuts, but I was honestly surprised by how much of this was palatable. Post your favorites down in the comments; there’s plenty to go around.
Black Sheep Wall – Songs for the Enamel Queen (Silent Pendulum Records) [Sludge/Post-Metal]

Six years after their last effort, this post-metal/sludge combo is back, and still very unhappy. It’s sonically and emotionally devastating music, newly enhanced (I think) by a mild peppering of mathy elements in the form of occasionally weird rhythms. Instruments crush with a dense, heavy sound, and a visceral and tortured vocal performance captures the attention even when “New Measurements of Failure” almost dissolves musically. FFO ugly and brutally honest stuff in the vein of Great Falls or Plebeian Grandstand. 2/26/21 (Hans)
Sorizon – Thanatos Rising (Independent) [Heavy Metal]

Don’t let that genre tag fool you; Sorizon is a heavy metal band in the same way that Nevermore and Sanctuary were, though the similarities between this act and the latter two are superficial. We’ve only got the title track available to listen to at the moment, but it’s very promising; it’s thick and clean sounding, and there’s a lot of creative guitar work in both the riffs and the leads here. Your mileage may vary with regards to the vocals, but if gritty singing and sweet guitar work are your thing, you’ll want to check this out. Hell, even if they’re not, you might give this a listen; I’m not sure what else to compare it to, so it’s worth a go just for its uniqueness. 2/26/21 (Spear)
