This Toilet Tuesday (3/27/19)
Toilet Tuesday is actually Wednesday once again upon us, and it’s… kinda weak? Nothing has really jumped out at me this week, which is kind of disappointing. At least you’ve got our resident pumpkin child’s mini review of the new Devin Townsend to look forward to. If there’s something else actually worth listening, yell at me in the comments about it.
Devin Townsend – Empath (InsideOut Records) [Prog Metal]

Empath is exactly the record you would expect Devin Townsend to make in 2019, assuming you’ve been paying any attention at all to the mad Canadian wizard over the past decade. He may have recently disbanded the Devin Townsend Project and released Empath as a solo effort, but this record fits right into the narrative of the releases produced under the DTP moniker. It combines Epicloud’s gleeful wall of sound with Deconstruction’s fearless theatricality to effortlessly swivel from ethereal dance rock to brutal shredgasms within compelling arrangements that consistently surprise without ever feeling forced or convoluted. To be completely honest, Devin Townsend has made both some of my all-time favorite music and some records I wish I could totally forget existed, but despite my hesitancy toward his more theatrical side I can say with zero hesitancy that this record totally won me over. It’s corny as hell but also weird as fuck and 100% sincere. If you’ve liked anything at all Devin Townsend has put out since The New Black, I bet there’s something here that will catch your ear and bob your head. 3/29/19 (HessianHunter)
