Cryptic Void – Post-human Godhood (Independent) [Deathgrind]

These guys have been at it for a minute, consistently pumping out very short but very high-quality material. I’d recommend it even if grind isn’t usually your thing, since they enhance it with plenty of sinister death metal atmosphere in service of the ongoing story being told. Steel Bearing Hand – Slay in Hell (Carbonized Records) [Death Thrash]

The number of pre-orders on Bandcamp speaks for itself, and I hope this is already on your radar too, but in case it isn’t: it’s an extremely fun mix of death, speed, and thrash metal that shreds mercilessly and melts your face with sick guitar leads. There’s none of the epic metal that the name might lead you to expect, but it makes me want to call people posers anyway. 4/2/21 (Hans)
The Sun and The Mirror – Dissolution to Salt and Bone (Brucia Records) [Drone/Doom/Folk]

Something a little experimental here. Droning, repetitive, yet not entirely unchanging guitars and a slow, steady drumbeat form the backdrop for all sorts of lead guitar shenanigans and ominous, enchanting melodies sung in a pleasant, clean voice. As Iron Goddess of Mercy put it, “I’m diggin’ the weird folk-drone buzzkill vibe.” 4/2/21 (Hans)
Cathartic Demise – In Absence (Independent) [Thrash]

Don’t be turned off by the somewhat forgettable name. This is French thrash played by very talented musicians who seem to be having tons of fun. Listen to “Blade in the Darkness” to get a feel for how the singer is utilised throughout most of the album: he does his (admittedly not great) thing for two to three minutes in the middle of a song before shutting up and letting the band shred through a whole bunch of super fun and usually pretty dang fast riffs. Sometimes you almost forget you’re not listening to an instrumental album, but it stays engaging nonetheless. 4/2/21 (Hans)
