This Toilet Tuesday (4/28/20)
It’s new music time, and we’ve got all kinds of stuff to fill your ears. Hans and Karhu have some fine selections for you today, but be sure to check out the big list once you’ve perused their highlights. Lots of stuff this week, and a fair amount if it seems pretty good.
Pyre – Chained to Ossuaries (Memento Mori) [Death Metal]

Pyre have been at it for a while now, and it shows – this is expertly crafted old school death metal. Crunchy, raw sound, vocals that stop just short of sounding like Chuck, and perhaps most importantly, songwriting that can keep you engaged through both the fast and slow parts. 4/27/20 (Hans)
Kurnugia – Forlorn and Forsaken (Memento Mori) [Death Metal]

More modern-sounding than Pyre, yet still eschewing all experimentation, this is a sweet, short slab of straightforward death metal that goes through all the motions you expect it too but does so in a most satisfying manner. I hope the rest of the record is just as lean. 4/27/20 (Hans)
Funeralopolis – …of Deceit and Utter Madness (Memento Mori) [Death Metal]

Guess I might as well finish this Memento Mori roundup by highlighting these (mostly) mid-tempo Lovecraftian bois. There’s heavy reverb on everything (I think the drums were recorded in a bathroom, and I love it), many of the slow parts are groovy as hell, and rarely do things devolve into the dreaded death doom crawl. 4/27/20 (Hans)
Thrawsunblat – Insula (Independent) [Black Metal]

Finally a return to electric expression from Thrash-N-Blast. Inspired by Chris Hadfield’s four keys to thriving in self isolation, it’s a Joel Violette solo effort this time around, but bears all the hallmarks of their best works, even if Violette’s harsh’s sound more coarse and thin than before, you’ll soon forget it as the majestic melodies kick in. Some of the best atmospheric/trees’n’Brunswick fog black metal around. 5/1/20 (Karhu)
