Welcome to another Toilet Tuesday! We’ve got a ton of awesome new releases this week, and W, Karhu, and some guy named Stockhausen are here to tell you about some of the best. There’s plenty more where that came from, though; be sure to check out that list below and share your picks in the comments.

giant of the mountain

Giant of the Mountain – The Empty Quarter (Burning Dogma Records) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Instinct,” “Crawl”

Giant of the Mountain has been around for a while now, and if you still haven’t heard them, now is the chance to make your life right. The Dallas death metal trio evokes every bit of that name, while adding a touch of nearly folk-like melodicism and more than a healthy amount of sludge. That’s not to say they don’t get up and move, however, as you’ll discover in the two tracks above. Flurries of technicality and speedy riffage make for an excellently balanced product, and headbanging of all varieties will surely ensue. My band had the privilege of playing with them a few years ago, and I’ve enjoyed following them as they get better and better with each release. 5/27/16 (Stockhausen)

in twilight's embrace

In Twilight’s Embrace – Trembling (Arachnophobia Records) [Death Metal]
Stream

I can’t decide whether the name “In Twilight’s Embrace” sounds like a doofy power metal band or a cheesy folk metal band. At the end of the day, though, it doesn’t matter, because In Twilight’s Embrace is a death metal band that absolutely rips. There are only three songs on their forthcoming EP, which is just enough to hook us listeners, rip us apart with vitriolic fury, and abandon us to crawl on bloody stumps toward their discography and beg for more. The ever-turbulent riffing and drumming absolutely deliver, and the raspy, venomous bark from vocalist Cyprian Łakomy completes the package in style. 5/25/16 (Stockhausen)

korgonthurus

Korgonthurus – Vuohen siunaus (Woodcut Records) [Black Metal]
Preview

I don’t have much to say about Korgonthurus that you won’t figure out in the first thirty seconds of “Vuohen Sunaus.” The band rrrriiiiiiiips and teeeearrrrs, playing a fast and loose take on shredding black metal with plenty of thrash influence. It’s violent, ugly, and misanthropic, loaded with big riffs and nasty screams. If you like nasty Finnish black metal, don’t miss it. FFO: Sacrilegious Impalement, Behexen, Horna 5/27/16 (W.)

haast's eagled

Haast’s Eagled – II: For Mankind (Holy Roar Records) [Girthy Doom]
Listen to “The Uncle”

eagled 5/27/16 (W.)

behexen

Behexen – The Poisonous Path (Debemur Morti) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Umbra Luciferi,” “Chalice of the Abyssal Water”

The Poisonous Path appears to take Behexen halfway between their own past and Sargeist, which ought to be no news – vocalist Hoath Torog and drummer Horns played in the band until last year, and guitarist Shatraug (who’s last Behexen record this is) is the mastermind behind it. Neglecting the death-ier elements from Nightside Eclipse was a smart move, The Poisonous Path brings back the remarkability and memorability of their earlier material. Hoath Torog’s voice may have come down from the razor sharp shriek to a gravel-gurgling rasp, but the riffs make up for any shortcomings in other departments. 5/27/16 (Karhu)

vainaja

Vainaja – Verenvalaja (Svart Records) [Death/Doom]
Listen to “Risti,” “Usva”

Heavier, thicker, more atmospheric, crushing-ier – if not as catchy – than the debut. Hecking good. 5/27/16 (Karhu)
