Brazen Tongue – Of Crackling Embers and Sorrows Drowned (Independent) [Symphonic Melodeath]
Brazen Tongue’s debut melds old-school melodeath with modern genre cross-pollination in a style at once nostalgic and exciting. Grandiose, operatic cleans leave a trail of Slugdge wherever they appear, and “Last Train from Myrdal” conjures the spirit of Woods of Ypres with baritone croons and the despair of doom. Simple and effective synth-work weaves through much of the 3 preview tracks, acting as an emotive backbone that supports the songs without drowning them in fondue. Listeners are just as likely to hear tech thrash (“The Weight of Self”) as they are blackened blasting; this sense of mystery has me waiting to see what else will emerge from the chrysalis this Friday. -Roldy
