Riffs from The Chasm, Morbid Angel, Bloodbath, Cradle Of Filth, Martyr, Discordance Axis, Crowbar, Nevermore, and Lost Soul.

Last round our theme was Speed and some kind of early bowl glitch kicked in and sent an army of ghost Bauers in to vote for fucking Archspire. Severe lack of speed metallers among you. Fucking shameful.

This week our theme is riffs from the year 2000
Here’s what you sent in…

Holdeneye
Nevermore – “The River Dragon Has Come” (Riff @ 1:55)

This is just one of the coolest songs ever. Loomis plays some sick harmonics on top of some beefy chugs and it’s simply sublime. Bonus: It has one of the best solos ever, too.

Hans
Cradle of Filth – ‘Lord Abortion’ (Riff @ 3:09)

This album was BIG for me back then and got me hooked on the band for about two or three years, which is probably too much.

Megachiles
The Chasm – ‘Architects of Melancholic Apocalypse’ (Riff @ 0:07)

Yeah Gateways to Annihilation is cool, but the lyrics are repetitive as hell. Like I get it Steve Tucker, you’re awake or awakening or something has awoken and there’s also some brothers and fathers. Dude clearly needed to lighten up a bit. Meanwhile Daniel Corchado is in straight up party-mode throwing down a “Come on!” in a song about the elder times and a necropolis. That’s a New Millennium Chad move if I’ve ever seen one, riff notwithstanding. Riff withstanding this stands with Kylie Minogue’s On a Night Like This as the indisputable pinnacle of music released in 2000.

[Lizard Note: vote for this, duh!]

McNulty
Morbid Angel – “Opening of the Gates” (Riff @ 0:44)

Let’s hope this week’s competition isn’t all Morbid Angel songs.
The riff at 0:44 is what I called a “bone grinding” one, years ago when I discovered Morbid Angel with this here album. And boy, does the music ever match that iconic cover art!

Evhron
Martyr – ‘Carpe Diem’ (Riff @ 0:40)

Them slides tho.

Yarnhawk
Bloodbath – ‘Furnace Funeral’ (Riff @ 0:54)

Just a quintessential death metal riff here. I’ve been enjoying ‘The Wacken Carnage’ live stuff quite a bit lately, so that’s why this riff gets the nod from a year chock full of excellent riffage.

Iron Goddess o’ Mercy
Crowbar – ‘Command of Myself’ (Riff @ 0:45)

Count on me [to post phat phuckin’ riphs] until I die. <3 <3 <3

vanNeun
Lost Soul – ‘Nameless’ (Riff @ 0:27)

In 2000 Polish DM saw ‘Litany’ and ‘Winds of Creation’. And while Lost Soul first album is not in the same league – it has some sings of things to come.

Lacertilian
Discordance Axis – ‘Radiant Arkham’ (Riff @ 0:00)

Vote for The Chasm or Martyr. Or Morbid Angel.
