Flush it Friday: Outré Beers
Back when I was first getting into beer, the wildest styles I knew of were black IPAs (still underrated to this day) and kettle sours (do any of these actually taste different?). A quick search today will net you some truly iniquitous concoctions, several of which I’ve corralled for your misery enjoyment:
Hvalur 2 – Brugghús Steðja
Iceland wilin’ out here. Rest assured, there’s an even more depraved sour version that involves curing the whale testicle in kombucha!
Pearl Necklace Chesapeake Stout – Flying Dog Brewery
Yes, this beer is brewed with shellfish (specifically, Rappahannock River oysters). But you know what? For this important cause, I would certainly give it a go:
“A healthy oyster reef not only filters the Chesapeake Bay’s waters, but also provides habitat for other important marine life such as blue crabs and striped bass. Every oyster we plant back into the Bay will have an immediate, positive impact.”
Our goal is to enable ORP to plant at least 1 million baby oysters back into the Chesapeake Bay through proceeds from Pearl Necklace. It will be available in all markets where our beer is currently sold on draft and in 6-packs.”
Rogue Ales – Beard Beer
Yes, this beer is brewed with yeast from a dude’s beard:
Beard Beer is brewed with wild yeast created from Brewmaster John Maier’s beard. No need to freak out, brewers have used wild yeasts in beer making for centuries. John has had the same old growth beard since 1978 brewing over 19,000 brews, so it’s no great surprise that a natural yeast ideal for brewing was discovered on his beard. What does Beard Beer taste like? Try it, we think you’ll be surprised…
During the month of November, Rogue Ales will not only be embracing hair but also donating proceeds from Beard Beer sales to No-Shave November, a nonprofit organization committed to raising cancer awareness and funds to support cancer prevention, research and education.
What’s the most whack shit you ever drank?
