Flush It Friday x Bandcamp Friday: An October Must

My bandcamp’s bandcamp looks like you.

Do I even need to explain what’s about to happen? I’m gonna hit you with 5 100-word reviews of 5 absolutely must-have albums and you’re gonna slop ’em all up like the good little Toilet Piggies you are. Why even bother with a preamble? I already know you love me to death. We’ll flush right after, my druidesses.

DOUBT – Held in Contempt
Get Better Records | July 12, 2024

Good morning, Baltimore! Every day is an open door! Every night… a fantasyyyyyyyyy. We know how the old song goes in this Trapped Under Ice world. DOUBT two-steps out of the now-famous hardcore scene with unrestrained vigour and an itchy-trigger-finger demeanour. Led by the caustic vocals of Claire Abila, DOUBT is not afraid to spread the love and hate to various corners of the hardcore world. Think the iced-out swagger of Cold World and the emotional vitriol of Ceremony and those first two really sick Trash Talk EPs. Watch out, ‘cause they’ll “make you pay for you what you did.”

Diuretic – Zero Days Without Incident
Strange Mono | July 12, 2024

The Eagles suck, Jalen Hurts is overrated, and Coach Nick Sirianni is like a rapper you know for a fact has never even done drugs let alone sold them. City of Brotherly Shove it Up Yer Ass. That’s the kind of attitude you’re going to get from these Philadelphia grind freaks who take it all the way back to the days of Terrorizer and Napalm Death and retain all that hardcore and punk energy in the songwriting. Bass tones ripped straight from the ’80s twist under blown-out guitar riffs and scuzzy as hell solos while Alyssa’s vocals scorch your earth.

Swamp Coffin – Drowning Glory
APF Records | September 27, 2024

Hot off the presses comes Drowning Glory, Swamp Coffin’s sophomore follow-up to 2021’s gold-standard debut Noose Almighty. It’s a relief to find that the Rotherham trio are still as mangey, dyspeptic, incensed, and melancholic as ever. Down-tuned grooves and spiteful vocals bring to mind something between Crowbar and Cavity with absolutely no need for novelty but all the need for colossal riffs that will swallow you whole and a temperament born in a stinking swamp and destined for a rotten coffin. Yes, there’s even a little mournful melody for those who want some Peaceville doom with their otherwise snarling sludge.

Thornlord – S/T
Independent | September 27, 2024

Prolific drummer Danny Walker sent this through the official TovH channels, and I was lucky enough to grab it. Though the band was conceived over 20 years ago, the various projects of Walker (Uphill fucking Battle, y’all!) and multi-instrumentalist Jake Vossler kept a lid on things until 2019. Thornlord offers up an eminently enjoyable serving of technical death metal infused with prog and black metal influences and a delightfully dreary atmosphere. Suffice to say, I like a tech death album that bums me out. Ample moments of unpredictability and weirdness abound. This album will surprise you in the best ways.

Alex Henry Foster – A Measure of Shape and Sounds
Hopeful Tragedy Records | September 20, 2024

Given the tenor of A Measure of Shape and Sounds, it’s no surprise that Alex Henry Foster named his record label Hopeful Tragedy. The impossible tension of those two terms undergirds this stunning record of “guitar loops, reverberations, resonances, and oscillations.” Co-written and performed with Ben Lemelin, A Measure… is the kind of introspective ambient that cradles listeners from lofty heights to abyssal depths a la William Basinski. An aching amount of tenderness, sorrow, resilience, and acceptance suffuses it, so much that you might find yourself pronate and staring in awe at both the profundity and quotidian nature of life.
