Synaptic – Enter the Void (Lifeless Chasm Records) [Melodic Tech Death]
Tech death this extravagant rarely leaves an impression on me, but the 17 years of silence since Synaptic’s debut EP seem to have been put to good use. The virtuosic shredding and knotted riffs one expects from tech death are all here, but it’s the Gorodian grooviness (check out that bass lick at 3:00 into the preview track!) and overall sense of joy that sends a jolt through my synapses. Whether channeling Psycroptic‘s legato phrasing or the spidery, start-stop madness of Blotted Science, Synaptic mold an exorbitant amount of notes into compositions that paradoxically melt minds and carve themselves into memory. -Roldy
