Yeah yeah you itty!

I hope you pay attention to these albums. They deserve it!

Independent | January 24, 2025

“I believe in slime!” So do I after a frenzied 15 minutes with Crabwalk to Oblivion. Stuffed with movie samples and songs similarly inspired by the big screen, Crabwalk to Oblivion seems at first to be a slick, pop-culture-obsessed, off-kilter mix of early-’90s crossover. The stakes are a bit higher, though. “Orange” and “Blood Island” pair off to take on the legacies of colonial and neocolonial violence perpetrated against First Nations people. “In a green hell / Misjudged and fell / And now you can tell / The wound starts to smell.” Politically righteous and righteously furious circle pits.

Bloodcrusher – Voidseekerhttps://f4.bcbits.com/img/a1524894439_10.jpg
Independent | January 9, 2025

One-man brutal death metal from the Beaver State that deserves some serious attention. Voidseeker is replete with slamming riffs, jolting rhythms, a flagrant disregard for your fleshbag, and a host of guest vocalists that give each song a unique flavour though the slurry is all the same bloody viscera. Fans of UK’s Repulsed, the legends Aborted, and bands named after words randomly selected from medical textbooks, should pay heed to “Serpents Circle,” “Seeker of the Void,” “Adorned in Rot,” and “Slamocracy.” This shit should have you wild-eyed, slavering with exsanguinary glee, ready to sacrifice it all for The Gore Corps.

Fiadh Productions | January 24, 2025 | Red swirl-shell cassette

Lust For Youth is set to release their first record since 2019, so I’ve got “Limerence” and “Illume” on the brain. Something about this new Wyoming Toad, with its Rainforest Café aesthetic, has me feeling illumerent, a neologism that captures the ability of an obsessive infatuation to make life all the clearer and more lucid. Korgs, Yahamas, Casios, and Moogs provide the bioluminescent backdrop to “the peeps, chirps, and trills of poison frogs.” Find some time to dance, contemplatively, this weekend. Don’t think hard about the dancing. Think about the endangered frogs. Sway for them. Digital proceeds to Fundación ProAves.

Fernmage/Moss Knight – Yellow Morel Orchestra Live from Woodhavenhttps://f4.bcbits.com/img/a4290206420_10.jpg
Tollroad Tapes | October 26, 2024 | Yellow-shell cassette

Tollroad, in conjunction with the Yellow Morel Orchestra, were kind enough to re-release the October cassette package. This whole album makes me think of the cult-in-the-wood scene from Beau is Afraid, though not for any reason I can articulate. The unconscious might be structured like a language, but that doesn’t make it knowable. I’d like to personally thank our cast of musicians: Timmy Turkeytail, Gretta Goldenoyster, Erma Enoki, Bartholomew Blacktrumpet, Liona Lionsmane, Norma Noblecap, and Marty and Mila Moral. As I have said for years, the world is your oyster mushroom. Make something soft, delicious, and nurturing out of it.

Independent | Autumn 2024

Magister Rimbog, in his alchemical mastery, has conjured something elemental and occult from disparate and seemingly unenchanted materials. The speculative transmutation found on Piercing the Saturnine Veil, philosophized and realized in a basement somewhere down in East Point, is a kind of ensorceral black metal indebted to an admixture of Malokarpatan and Negative Plane. Some say the Magister can be seen in a white suit with red boots, Telecaster in hand. Some say the Magister can transmogrify bodies into endlessly beautiful canvases. But these are local legends. I implore you, if I even needed to, to marvel at the uglysleeves.
