O Baleful Bemis, O Flushéd Father, swirl away all memory of our mastication. This week, we’ve got angry shotguns, fire mages, and ill-chosen acronyms. Though the Toilet waters run low in the baking heat, delights abound for all brave souls that dredge the depths.
Grotesquerie – Uninhabited Plane (Iron Fortress Records) [Death]
There’s something unsettling about a death metal album cover sans suppuration, especially from a band whose previous release was titled Composted Beyond Recognition. (What unethical experimentation led to this shift in just three years?) Some of Grotesquerie’s goregrind DNA has dribbled onto this EP, most clearly in Lionel Testaz’s sputum-soaked gutturals, but the mosh riff that forms the spine of preview track “Cloned (In Perpetuity)” is unadulterated OSDM. I’m reminded of Extremity‘s Extremely Fucking Dead, itself a love letter to the regional pockets of death metal styles, caked in dried fluids meant to be kept inside the body.
P.S.: The band has until Friday to fix the nonexistence of a mustard yellow tee for purchase. This is IMPERATIVE. -Roldy
