Pupil Slicer – Fleshwork (Prosthetic Records) [Mathcore]

As a huge fan of 2023’s Blossom, I was a little nervous to see a release date for a new Pupil Slicer album less than a year and a half later. Most bands need a little more time to brew up something special, but apparently, these mathy lunatics are just brimming with ideas. The non-stop intensity can be suffocating at times, but unexpectedly catchy rhythms and melodies reach out like lifelines. Fleshwork is a quick album full of aggressive grind-like tracks that just throw ideas down and move on, but I do wish there were more tracks like the closer “Cenote,” which takes some time to breathe and expand. These softer, post-hardcore-focused tracks are where Pupil Slicer sets itself apart, and I’d like to see that show up more often. Either way, this one is another winner. -Joaquin Stick
