Mors Verum – Canvas (Transcending Obscurity Records) [Dissonant Tech Death]
Mors Verum have painted me into a corner with their latest EP: clearly, I can no longer claim distaste for dissonance. Canvas emits something of an auditory “call of the void,” its bursts of atonality stirring morbid curiosity that can be inspected without fear of physical harm (besides to our cervical vertebrae). In combination with myriad influences—from fluid, twisting riffs in the vein of Psycroptic and Severed Savior to two-step hardcore and nimble jazz—these songs maintain a balance of accessibility and experimentation that keeps me coming back despite the initial discomfort. Perversely, it seems the ugliness and instability of Canvas have opened doors for me to appreciate beauty in a new light. -Roldy
