The Crypt – Gichigami (Independent) [Doom / Classical / Instrumental]
Gichigami‘s mix of HM-2-encrusted doom and orchestral arrangements brings to mind a more experimental Grayceon, but easy comparisons end there. Each of these long-form tracks corresponds to one of the Great Lakes; for example, “Gichigami” and “Mishigami” refer to Lake Superior and Lake Michigan’s original Ojibwe language names. (I am a sucker for structural concept albums, so I was done for as soon as I searched what the album title meant.) Between “Mishigami”‘s martial brass and “Hauregane”‘s prog rock flutes and folk metal finale—somehow reminiscent of both Ecdysis-era Horrendous and Lumsk—the instruments tell their story with no need for a vocalist.
