Lividus – Scarabaeus (Nameless Grave Records) [Prog Blackened Death]
Scarabaeus blends black metal in the vein of The Bastard-era Hammers of Misfortune with bombastic leads and progressive flourishes; the result is an LP that calls to mind Suffering Hour‘s ringing dissonance even as operatic cleans and staccato viola (performed by Uta Plotkin) channel the spirit of Grayceon. Pierce Williams’ drumming helps keep the disparate elements of the band’s sound moored (just barely) to sanity; whether blasting in lockstep with Uta’s strings (“The Empty Circle”) or playing a relaxed groove, the bright, compact sound of his kit anchors these chaotic compositions. I’m curious to hear if the band tackles some epic-length tracks on Scarabaeus, as the preview songs are both under 4 minutes. Maybe I’m just greedy, but I want to see them let their hair elytra down this Friday! -Roldy
