This week, we’ve got ADVANCED DARKNESS, a truly terrible band name, and an even worse band name. Prog hawgs and death trogs will both be eating well this time around, and if you enjoy trees ‘n shid black metal, the forest will overtake you shortly. Cursebinder – Psychohazard (Avantgarde Music) [Prog Black]
This sophomore release from Cursebinder is dizzying on several levels; from the ocular barrage of the artwork to the careening compositions, the band evokes a sense of frenzied motion. Songs like “The Astronaut” veer from grandiose blackened death in the vein of Sulphur Aeon to brooding goth rock without unraveling, and versatile synths—provided by Dormant Ordeal vocalist, Maciej Proficz—evolve to match each track’s intensity. Psychohazard will inevitably draw comparisons to White Ward (they invented the saxophone in 2017), but beyond the brass, Cursebinder is its own beast, leading listeners through tangled soundscapes rife with experimentation. Judging by the two preview tracks, there will be many strange roads to travel this Friday, with surprises lurking around every bend. -Roldy
