This Toilet Tuesday (7/12/16)
Greetings, friends, and welcome to This Toilet Tuesday! I apologize for the somewhat short list this week; my hunting and gathering was stymied by moving into a new apartment and lack of internet connection. However, what it lacks in quantity it makes up in quality. There’s a lot to like here, so peruse that list and share anything I might have missed.
Pestifere – Hope Misery Death (Eihwaz/Bindrune) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Don’t Let the Winter Take You”
It seems like there’s a constant influx of folky black metal these days, but it’s hard to complain when it’s this good. “Don’t Let the Winter Take You” cuts right to the chase with a rollicking mid-tempo tremolo riff (that shockingly isn’t accompanied by blastbeats), transitioning to melancholy chording and a brief acoustic interlude. It maintains a constant sense of urgency even through its bleak slower sections, masterfully conveying both the looming onset of winter and the song’s message of perseverance. Don’t skip out on Pestifere. 7/15/16 (Spear)
PanzerBastard – Motörheathen (Patac Records) [Speed/Hardcore]
Stream
I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something gives me the impression that these guys might be Motörhead fans. Maybe it’s that familiar crunchy bass tone, or the sweet pentatonic shreddage. Maybe it’s that swagger that shows up in the more speed metal-oriented sections. It’s probably just me, though. Joking aside, Motörheathen is an awesome mixture of speed and hardcore that both pays homage to the band’s heroes and puts their own sound on display. 7/15/16 (Spear)
Jugurtha – Empyre (Independent) [Progressive Blackened Death]
Stream
Empyre is, in a word, chaotic. It’s capricious in all aspects, rarely sticking with a single idea for more than a few measures and veering off on wild tangents without notice. There are equal parts melody and dissonance, not relying too heavily on either to drive the music forward. It’s a challenging, visceral listen, but one that’s thoroughly enjoyable if you’re prepared for the ride. Oh, and it’s name your price, so go get it right now. 7/10/16 (Spear)
Bastardizer / BulletBelt – Bring Back The Riff [Split] (Slime Pit Music) [Black Thrash]
Preview
Some of you might remember Bastardizer from my four part series highlighting my favourite short releases of 2015. For those that missed those posts, you need to know that the quartet from my hometown (Sydney, Australia) play a no-nonsense brand of blackened thrash that will have you fist-pumping and chanting Satanic rites before you even reach one of their infectious choruses. Teaming up this time with New Zealand’s Bulletbelt for this 7″ vinyl release consisting of a cover by each band from slightly unexpected source material. Bastardizer (shown second in the preview clip) have chosen to cover Australian 70’s rock band Skyhooks‘ anthem “Living In The Seventies”, while BulletBelt have chosen a track from veteran kiwi punk band Sticky Filth. The references in the title and accompanying video will probably be lost on those who don’t know an ANZAC from their arse-crack; but you’ll just have to make do with the knowledge that these bastards (like the majority of Rugby fans) crave a return to the simpler times of yore, where if someone was being a fuckwit, you told them so with your fist. You can help bring back the biff riff from July 17th. (- Lacertilian)
