This Toilet Tuesday (6/5/18)
It’s Toilet Tuesday once more, and it’s time for some sweet jams. Hans and Karhu have picked a bunch of albums for you to check out, and I can assure you their quality is inversely proportional to the amount of color in their cover art. Caveman Cult – Supremacía Primordial (Larval Productions) [Black/Death Metal]

To quote my brother bear, “War metal. War metal never changes.” And even the Thunder poppers Torche’s Rick Smith understands not to toy with the fact. Supremacia Primordial is twelve minutes worth of noisy, savage barrage of riffs that you know are there more than you hear them. Unfortunately the slower moments adding that slight variation so crucial to garnering true momentum in the genre, and that the band previously excelled in, are lacking on this EP and though not in such dire need of them as an album would be, it leaves Supremacia Primordial as a minor work. Though for any friend of the genre a great minor work. 6/6/18 (Karhu)
Deathwards – Towards Death (Invictus Productions) [Thrash/Death]

And they’re off! Without much fuss, Deathwards launch into an old school harsh metal assault that is a veritable riff-fest. The front-and-center, thrashy vocals with a hardcore-ish edge might not be everyone’s cup of diarrhea, but for me they ride a fine line between ‘too standard’ and ‘too annoying’. Wømb – Taciturn (Purodium Rekords) [Black Metal]

I’ve done it a couple of times, but I must again invoke Black Monolith. That project’s mix of black metal and crust with its distinct sound has set my standard for anything operating in the same niche, and this promises to at least come close to it. There’s similar levels of distortion on the guitar and vocals, muddying the output of the former and making the latter downright ear-piercing at times (but not as taxing as Axis Of Light made it). The energy is somewhat different, leaning more on the “black” than the “crust”, but the short runtime hints at a somewhat punk attitude that might rear its head in other ways, too.
