Premiere: Serocs – “Nonbeing”
Dirty, filthy tech for your Tuesday
With the recent dissolution of Spawn of Possession and the sustained radio silence from Abhorrent, we are facing a severe shortage of tech death bands that aren’t afraid to get down and dirty with their music. We still have Serocs, though, and with a new album release right around the corner, we’ll be able to get our fix of nasty riffs sooner than not. You’ll get to hear some of those riffs today with “Nonbeing,” the third single from The Phobos/Deimos Suite. Strap yourselves in, because this is intense.
A recent lineup refresh, bringing in members of Sutrah, Chthe’ilist, and Benighted, has brought new life to the multinational band, and you can hear each of their talents on display with “Nonbeing.” Starting off at a relatively slow pace, the guitars duel atop a churning foundation of intricate drums and bass. Heavy and discordant as it is, the interplay between each instrument is very impressive. They rarely follow each other note-for-note, instead creating a complex weave of rhythm and melody that builds up to an incredible explosion of speed halfway through.
Entirely devoid of aimless noodling or self-indulgent solos, The Phobos/Deimos Suite is focused and punishing callback to early 2000’s tech death. It gets by solely on the strength of its riffs, and as you can see, those riffs are mighty indeed. This is tech we can all get behind.
