This Toilet Tuesday (4/9/19)
It’s Toilet Tuesday, and we’ve got hella new tunes for you. We’ve got a bigass list this time around, and besides our selected jams, there’s a bunch of good stuff lurking in the bigger list. Check that thing out and share your own picks for the week.
Örk Bastards – Warmongers of the Gloomy Lands (Grotesque Sounds/No Bread!) [Thrash]
Listen
Album art and the length of the songs may already tell you that this isn’t the most clean-cut sort of thrash, and indeed, Örk Bastards keep it fast and dirty by injecting a heaping dose of crust. Not at the cost of melody though, which together with the blackened vocals may make this attractive for fans of earlier Skeletonwitch. Second track is way cooler than the first one btw, so let’s hope there’s more of that. 4/10/19 (Hans)
Hath – Of Rot and Ruin (Willowtip) [Progressive Death Metal]
Listen to “Usurpation”
Hath took me by surprise; while that cover and logo seemingly indicates a bleak atmospheric black metal album, their music is beefy, groovy prog death in the same vein as the first Rivers of Nihil album. It’s got a good balance of raw speed and headbanging parts, and I’m all about that violent scream. Based on this first single, this has some mighty potential. 4/12/19 (Spear)
Ketzer – Cloud Collider (Metal Blade) [Death/Thrash]
Listen | Podcast
Remember the reaction Starless received? And no, it wasn’t just our beloved Beargod who dubbed the 2016 departure from their thrashy roots as a largely lacklustre affair. The album barely sounded like the same band who’d previously penned the furious riffing whirlwind Satan’s Boundaries Unchained. So it was with reasonable apprehension that fans approached news of another Metal Blade release from the group. However, as we discussed a couple of episodes ago on the Riff-Raff Podcast, Ketzer appeared to have reverted (at least in part) to their old ways, along with some added interest by way of the nascent Norwegian psych-tinged death metal sound. Since then we’ve been privy to hearing the rest of Cloud Collider, and can bring the good news that they’ve reached an almost full recovery from the post-metal malaise. Tonally, the album sits somewhere inbetween Enzeit Metropolis and Starless, with only really the Tribulation-esque sounds of the latter holding over. Worth a hit. 4/12/19 (Lacertilian)
