Flush It Friday: Music Video Night…

…is how I keep my keep my body strong.

Last Friday while failing to find the Criterion app on my “smart” TV–my particular device does not support the Criterion app, turns out!–I stumbled upon XITE, an app (channel?) that plays exclusively music videos. What a dream! So instead flipping over to Tubi to watch another Hitchcock movie from the 30s (awful lotta blackface in Young and Innocent), we settled into whatever XITE had to offer. And what offerings they were! Olivia Rodrigo definitely is just a new generation’s version of Avril Lavigne, but I also think that’s what My Chemical Romance sounds like? I couldn’t tell you. It can be difficult to remember, because of the success and airwave dominance Random Access Memory, that Daft Punk used to be (still is?) really cool and made great videos. Britney Spears reminded us of how flagrant low-rise jeans were and why high-rise jeans were subsequently all the rage. Though a Major Lazer video never showed up, sadly, there was enough nameless DJ music from 2006-2014 that explains entirely, along with Daft Punk, why Diplo had such early success. Just when I was wondering when the nu-metal would land, there arrived Linkin Park. I could never necessarily explain it, especially because I was listening to plenty of nu-metal in 2000, but I now realized that the video for “In the End” is why I always thought that band was so lame. Ginuwine is/was so sexual I’m honestly surprised it got that popular. Timbaland was literally everywhere and in every video, even with Nelly Furtado. (I never realized Furtado ditched the whole singer/songwriter thing. Her megahits are the blandest things I’ve watched/seen, excepting, of course, Timbaland’s presence. It’s dreck.) The highlight of the night, though, was Dead or Alive‘s “That’s the Way (I Like It).” Have you seen this video? Have you seen the other videos? My sincerest apologies to Pete Burns, may he rest in queer icon heaven. Other than mainlining Transcending Obscurity samplers and premieres, I’ve only listened to Dead or Alive this week. I guess that will change now that A$AP Rocky actually released his newest album, though who knows what we’ll find inside. I’ll probably just keep listening to all these Dead or Alive albums and dancing in my car, in the parking lot, on a walk, on campus, in my living room, in my kitchen, in your bedroom, in your parents’ laundry room. Wherever, really.

Long live music videos. Let’s flush!
