It’s only Tuesday and this week has already been too long. My plans for last weekend were thoroughly flushed due to flat tires and projectile vomiting (in that order, even), and readjusting to my normal nocturnal hours has been hell. Fortunately, Tuesday means sick new jams, and this week’s definitely take the sting off. Sit back, hit play, and let all the bullshit just fade into the background.

Antichrist – Sinful Birth (Electric Assault Records) [Thrash]
Listen to “Fall of the Temple of Solomon”

I actually found out about Antichrist because I saw that they’d be playing my town sometime around July or August, and after taking the time to listen to Sinful Birth (as well as some of their first album, Forbidden World), I have to say I’m very excited for the chance to see them live. Sinful Birth is absolute, non-stop fury from start to finish. Antichrist is hardly the first band to take this approach, but they pull it off with such ferocity that they really stand out among some of their contemporaries. Think back to the early days of Kreator, Slayer, Dark Angel, and anything else on the darker, more extreme side of thrash, and you’re on the right track. Once the riffing starts, it really doesn’t stop until the album is over. The vocals also match the fury and old-school sensibilities of the music and production as well, mostly comprised of coarse, jagged shouts and barks that occasionally morph into high-pitched shrieks similar to the ones Tom Araya used to employ. There’s not a lot more to really cover with this one. It’s really all in the execution, which is excellent. It’s fast. It’s furious. It’s relentless (but sure as hell not Repentless). 6/16/17 (DumpsterLung)

Discröyd – The Mob Law (Independent) [Thrash]
Stream

Let’s go ahead and get right to the point with this one. It’s great! The band’s own promotion of their album describes it as “13 tracks of alcohol fueled thrash’n’roll,” and while you’d be forgiven for seeing “alcohol fueled” and thinking of the many generic “pizza thrash” bands of the last several years, give this one a listen and you’ll hear influence from a wider variety of classic thrash acts than you’d expect. The opening track wastes no time jumping straight into a killer riff that absolutely channels classic Anthrax (that’s ’80s/Belladonna-era Anthrax, to be clear — You get outta here right now if you thought of the John Bush years for even one second), except paired with hoarse shouting vocals that’d be perfectly at home in a more blackened band like Midnight (or Venom, if we’re sticking to the vintage acts), which perfectly compliments the “thrash’n’roll” attitude in the aforementioned album promo. There’s really much more variety than they give themselves credit for, though. There are even a couple of spots where Discröyd briefly employ weird, Voivod-esque chords before giving way to more classic hardcore/crossover riffs again. That reminds me–did I mention crossover fans ought to love this too? Well, there you have it. Alright, I’ll quit trying (and failing) to be concise in explaining all the things I like about this album and conclude by reminding you that this rules. 6/17/17 (DumpsterLung)

The Summoned – Sessions (Independent) [Progressive Death Metal]
Stream

As I’m sure you’re all aware of at this point, I have a bit of a soft spot for weirdo prog death, so when a death metal band likens themselves to TDEPBTBAM, and other such acronymed groups, you can be sure I’m going to listen. And I’ll be damned if those comparisons aren’t apt; The Summoned very much sound like the two aforementioned bands mixed together and death-metalled up, mixing skronky mathcore madness with some bizarre melodies and very Tom Giles-esque vocal cadences. As of this writing I’m only about halfway through the album, but even just these first four songs are such a strong showing that I have to recommend it. 6/17/17 (Spear)
