Flush it Friday: Pangolin Appreciation

My road to pangolins was a strange one indeed, beginning with Pokémon Red in 1998. I was drawn to Sandslash by their spiny exteriors, giant claws and mysterious eyes—they’re quite alien, and as a weird little fledgling, I felt a sense of camaraderie with them. I’m not sure how it happened (thought I wouldn’t be surprised if David Attenborough or National Geographic were involved), but by third grade, I was making a clay diorama of a pangolin for some sort of biology project. (I will never forget the merciless taunting that I had some sort of lisp and just couldn’t say the word “penguin” correctly, even though yes, clearly penguins have scales and don’t have wings.)

As is the way of the world, the older I got, the more I realized everything is fucked. It’s entirely unexpected, but pangolins are the most trafficked mammal on the planet. The illegal trade of pangolins is focused on their scales (made of nothing more than keratin), which are believed to have health benefits and magical powers in traditional Chinese medicine. As of 2020, all 8 species of pangolin are vulnerable to extinction. If you’re interested in pangolin conservation, please check out this link to learn more about what you can do to help these fantastic critters. I am once again making FiF posts that have nothing to do with music. But that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the hard work the fam put in this week. Check it:
