Flush It Friday: Riffs Abound, Boundless Riffs

All he ever talks about is riffs.
And I ain’t gonna stop!
Crisis Actor – Long Live the New Flesh
Wise Blood Records | March 10, 2025
Because of a Jacobin article about thieving landlords, I read a “paper” in praise of price gouging. I won’t even link it. At one point, this ghoul—whose purpose in life is to give “intellectual” cover for bad economics—gushes about Uber’s surge pricing: “I was grateful that Uber let me pay other people to postpone their trip for a while, and send a loud signal that more drivers were needed.” Capitalist brain rot is real, y’all. “So much for the tolerant left,” reads the aegis under which Crisis Actor rip their revolution-worthy crusty d-beat grindcore. Get fucked, Hoover Institute.
Grave Sermon – Liturgical Perversions
Fiadh Productions | February 28, 2025
Originally released in the Fall of 2024, Liturgical Perversions recently got the Fiadh treatment on an appropriately pitch-black shell cassette. Featuring members of Legion of Wolves and Abaddon Incarnate, Grave Sermon rip through death metal with the kind of carnal abandon fans of Immolation or Krisiun will dig. There’s no surrender here. “Vial of Wrath” keeps churning, keeps swirling, keeps raging. It’s nice to believe that depraved, iniquitous zealots will meet an ultimate ruination. A bit hard to believe, though, at the moment. But remember: it’s domestic terrorism to vandalize Teslas or Tesla factories. So go be a domestic terrorist.
Bloodcrusher – The Drippings II: Bits and Pieces
Independent | March 1, 2025
Somebody get Dave McKey a label already! We all agreed Voidseeker was the Slam Jam o’ the Month, so what gives? Fortunately, label or not, Bloodcrusher has more hyper slams and super grinds. If we’re splitting hairs, getting into the nitty gritty of this itty bitty, this random assortment of tracks feels more on the brutal death metal side of things. To be sure, we’re still slamming (“Viscera Bomb” and “Gorechild”), but there’s something about tracks like “Blood Cannon” that seem willing to leave the slam behind to better marshal you into the wood chipper. But maybe I’m the “Ignoramus.”
Pain of Truth / SUNAMI – Coast to Coast
Triple B Records / Daze | March 3, 2025
Surprise-released earlier this month, Coast to Coast is an amuse bouche for the two bands’ upcoming tour starting in San Jose at RBS Fest before making its way through the East Coast, Rust Belt, and Dirty South. I’ve got my eyes on the Atlanta date featuring motherfucking PeelingFlesh. Of course, the painful truth of it all is that these respective coasts won’t be around much longer thanks to tsunamis. Maybe Terminal West in Atlanta will be a beachfront venue in a few years. Maybe ignorant breakdowns will be our ballast against the coming storm. Nothing else seems to be working.
Ghostsmoker – Inertia Cult
Art As Catharsis | March 21, 2025
The resemblance of the band’s logo to Bongripper’s hooked me before I heard one thundering-from-down-undering note of the Melbourne quartet’s Bongripper/Conan earth-moving sludge. These are towering and thick riffs, with all the force of a coast-to-coast tidal wave. Nathan Brunning’s vocals are caustic and raspy, giving the whole thing a blackened vibe. Too, the band will drop out of life with bong in hand and into mournful post-metal dirges with little warning. If you hear some Ufomammut in tracks like “Bodies to Shore,” I hear it, too. We hear it as a family. Adding blokes from KVLL sure paid off.
And now we Flush!
The Monday Press from Stick 365. This Toilet Tuesday from Roldy. These are our traditions.
A lovely show review from Reliquary Tower about his time at the recent Alcest/Mono gig. “Concert”? C’mon.
Eenzy sort of interviewed dope Atlanta band Low Before the Breeze. Spend 8 minutes listening to the interview and then jam the skramz.
Toilet Radio 549 asks the question: when did Mastodon become Brent’s band? and who agreed to it anyhow? Joe n Jordan investigate.
365 brought us some Topeka heat with this track premiere from Unmerciful.
Stevo goldstar’d Goldstar from Imperial Triumphant.
Another show review from RT, this time featuring City of Caterpillar and Those Internet Motherfuckers.
What happened to this week? How did I do all that work and still end up with so much left to do? Why do I feel like my weekend is gonna disappear, too? This is all nuts. Read the posts. Comment on the posts. And then drop your GBUs. If you’re W, you can add your H to the list. Hugs and kisses, y’all.
