Who doesn’t love a good comeback?

To be honest, Abiotic is a band I haven’t really thought about in some time. It’s been nearly 6 years since the release of their last album, Casuistry—long enough ago that I was merely a casual tech death fan, back when I still had unfried neurons. A gap that long between albums can be the death knell of some acts, but that’s not so here. Abiotic is back with a vengeance, and I can assure you today’s single is going to keep them at the forefront of your brain. We’re bringing you “Grief Eater, Tear Drinker,” the third single from upcoming album Ikigai.

This song is everything I like in technical death metal. It’s intermittently heavy and soaring with mystical, mysterious melodies, driven by lightning instrumental work (plus a wonderful guest spot from vocalist Jonathon Carpenter), a dense composition yet easy to follow with new details unfolding on subsequent listens. It carries trace elements of Arkaik and Rivers of Nihil, but as a whole, it’s another thing entirely. Between this, “Souvenir of Skin,” and “Smoldered,” Ikigai is shaping up to be an incredibly exciting release.

Ikigai releases on February 12th through The Artisan Era, available on Bandcamp and through the label shop for all you big merch boys. Be sure to go give Abiotic a hearty welcome back on Facebook as well.
