Riff Of The Year: First Quarter Edition
Riffs from Sutrah, Earth Rot, Kvaen, Jordablod, Vengeful Spectre, Bütcher, Akurion, Scalpture, and Marrasmieli.
You bloody Ripper! Last week you guys got it correct. Congrats. You actually made it a 1 & 2 as Sweven was tied for second place.
This week we were looking for your fave riffs released in 2020 so far
Here’s what you sent in…
Alphonzo Garbonzo
Bütcher – ’45 RPM Metal’ (Riff @ 6:17)
This album is such a blast; does absolutely nothing new, but is played with sincere energy and passion. You can just hear how much fun these guys were having playing this.
Holdeneye
Earth Rot – “The Cape of Storms” (Riff @ 1:00)
My favorite song from my favorite album of 2020 thus far. This section from 1:00 to 1:42 is a gloriously worming riff that morphs along with the drum rhythms beneath it. I know Slugdge is a sacred name around these parts, but I’m not afraid to claim that this riff would bring honor to Mollusca.
Positronic Brain
Vengeful Spectre – ‘The Expendables’ (Riff @ 0:40)
Obviously this song would be better if it was about Sylvester Stallone getting together with a bunch of oldass 80s action movie bros and kicking butt, but don’t hold that against this riff. It fucking slays.
Hans
Marrasmieli – ‘Karakorum’ (Riff @ 1:45)
Music may be the only area where this year is doing well so far. There’s even been some good atmospheric black metal. Here’s a catchy riff from one example of that.
Yarnhawk
Kvaen – ‘Revenge by Fire’ (Riff @ 0:00)
An absolutely perfect way to open up an album.
Iron Goddess of Mercy
Sutrah – “Variation I.ii – Lethe” (Riff @ 0:00)
There might be better riffs on this track, but this one convinced me i-m-m-e-d-i-a-t-e-l-y that I was into this band and was wrong about their first record. I don’t expect to the be the only person who submits something from this EP. <3<3<3
vanNeun
Scalpture – ‘Hell is a Field in France’ (Riff @ 1:50)
A.K.A. Hail Of Asphyx Throwers.
McNulty
Akurion – “Bedsores to the Bone” (Riff @ 0.50)
I’ve been waiting for this album for years now (and it’s probably going to be worth the wait). The riffs are constantly shifting with this band, and the songs are long enough to allow for all they have going on. This song is full of good’uns, but my favorite comes at 0:50.
Lacertilian
Jordablod – ‘Blood And Rapture’ (Riff @ 4:09)
Since my fave riff from the new Ulcerate isn’t up just yet, I’m digging back to January for this amazing occult-surf-americana-prog-black metal record from Jordablod. Wasn’t sure how they’d manage to follow-up that killer debut from 2017 but they damn well did it.
Next week our theme is solo artists
i.e. one-person bands
